Users don’t need to buy Microsoft Office just to be able to read MS Word files. There are lots of free programs we can use to read files that are created by MS Word 2010, MS Word 2007, MS Word 2003 and other MS Word versions. Microsoft, for example, provides a free MS Word Viewer that anyone can use as an alternative to the commercial product. Another free program you can use to read an MS Word file is TextMaker Viewer.
TextMaker Viewer is a free document viewer that supports a number of file formats (see below for the complete list of the file formats it supports). Its 4MB size is much smaller than the official Word Viewer provided by Microsoft which has around 24.5MB in size. It is designed to work with Windows only. It has a nag screen asking you to register the product even though it is free. Fortunately, this nag screen can be removed by checking off the checkbox. However, for some reason, you can only see this checkbox after you run the program several times. More »
